Liability coverage under your personal auto insurance policy provides payment for any bodily injury and property damage resulting from the use of your vehicle for which your become liable. This includes yourself as the insured, your family members and other individuals that drive your vehicle with your permission. The insurance company will pay the amounts up to the limits specified in the declaration section of your policy.

Liability coverage is often referred to on what is called a "split limit basis" and depicted in your auto insurance policy such as 100/300/150. In this example, the 100 represents $100,000 which is the amount paid per person for bodily injury in any one accident. The 300 represents $300,000 which is the amount paid per accident for bodily injury. The 150 represents $150,000 which is the total amount of property damage paid for any one accident. You have options on how much coverage to purchase and many states mandate a minimum level of coverage.

Damages typically covered include at a minimum:

  • Bodily Injury: This typically includes payments for medical costs including pain and suffering due to the injury. You will need to provide proof that you actually incurred the costs.
  • Property Damage: This generally includes any property that is damaged due to negligent operation of the vehicle including damage to other vehicles, buildings and other stationary objects.

There are additional rules, exclusions and supplemental payments that vary by state. Be sure to check with your agent for advise on coverage amounts and specific requirements in your state.
